In addition to weddings, I perform photography for many types of events,
such as birthdays, retirement parties, corporate events, etc.
If you want to capture the many moments of your special event, hire a
professional. Don't let the event pass by with nothing left over
but a few random snapshots taken by cell phones. As an event
photographer I can blend into the background quietly taking photos,
keeping a keen eye on the action around me and timing the photos.
The best photographs are the candid shots of real emotional moments
captured as they occur. These photos generate the best response from
those who view them. Many such moments pass by un-noticed by
others, unless you have a good photographer, you will miss many of these
moments that happen all of the time.
At the end of the event you will have a good supply of high-quality
photos that you can share with others or publish them in newsletters or
emails.
Event photography is physically the most demanding, but it is also
the most rewarding. My mode of operation is to keep moving and
keep shooting. But I won't just randomly rapid shoot, instead I
stalk the potential moments and shoot when the time is right.
If nothing happens, I just keep moving and keep watching my
surroundings, setting up for the next moment. This technique has
worked well for me so far. I seem to be able to generate genuine
responses from my subjects even when they are aware I am taking their
photo. These results can be seen in my
Event Portfolio.
Indoor flash photography can be a challenge. An inexperienced
photographer will produce photos where the subject is washed out in
bright light and the background nearly blacked out. I use a
profressional Metz TTL flash and bounce the light off the surroundings
to light up the background. After all, the event is going on
around the subject why exclude it with poor illumination. You can
see this technique in my
Event Portfolio as well. In certain photos where the
background is not interesting, it can be left in the dark, bringing the
subjects to the front stage. The Mamiya camera and Metz flash are
matched perfectly using TTL technology that reads in the amount of light
falling on the film to adjust the power of the flash. This keeps
the exposure perfect without washing out detail in too much light.
If you notice in the interior shots, there is a very soft light wrapping
around the subjects with the main power of the flash directed to light
up the surroundings. The flash light is directed so evenly that it
looks like the photo was taken using only the interior light.
These are the types of techniques used and the types of photos you can
expect to receive at your next event.
