October 04, 2008:

Photo Shoot at Lindsey's

Well, I was not sure what to expect, so I brought everything just in case.
I had my two Mamiya cameras (actually a third one I just use to hold an extra back).  I also brought my complete portable light studio, two softboxes, and umbrella light and a reflector.  Next time I can travel a little lighter.

The photo-shoot was in La Canada, California.  This was the first time I had ever been there and I was impressed.  It's amazing to see these hidden, beautiful, older Los Angeles communities.  I met Lindsey who is a makeup artist here in Los Angeles.  She set up about five different models for me to photograph.  These photos were to be used in her web-site to promote her make-up business.  We both arrived at her parent's house at the same time and shortly the models arrived.

While Lindsey was working on the models, I took some time to scout the location.  The house was a beautiful Italian style home with a classical interior. The exterior was made of a nice garden-like backyard and patio (there was suppose to be a pool, but I did not see it).  There was plenty of greenery for nice backgrounds.

The weather had changed dramatically that day, from total sunshine and three digit heat to clouds and rain.  The weather, I knew would be a challenge.  I would need to do some outside photos and indoor photos as well.  For now I would set up my command post at the edge of the patio, close to some umbrella covered tables, just in case.  While the weather permitted, I set up my heavy Bogen tripod on the patio next to a fountain.  I panicked a little when I was looking for a power source and discovered the house had older two pronged outlets!  Luckily, Lindsey guided me to a lone modernized outlet that would work.  Next time I will be sure to bring a converter plug, just in case.  I guess that goes to show you can't anticipate everything.

Lindsey had requested mostly head-shots for her models and some upper torso shots.  Based on that request, my lens of choice was my 150 mm 2.8 telephoto and I also added my 145 soft focus lens.
