First up was Shauna,
a thin
brunette with Alanis Morissette like qualities. I set a softbox on
one side and a small strobe very low for fill light. I experienced
some problems with the secondary light not firing, so I left it out and
just used one. I lowered the softbox even with Shauna's face for side
lighting. I was counting on the diffused ambient light for fill
light. It seemed to work. I started with my 145mm soft focus
lens on its lightest setting (any more would have been too much).
I got one very spectacular shot with this lens, the others were nice,
some were a bit underexposed. I think my mac's monitor is
set too bright. I have used Photoshop's gamma correction on all of
my monitors to make sure I am evaluating exposure's correctly, but I do
not have that available for the mac.
I had just enough time to finish with Shauna outside before it started
to rain. I had to move the equipment indoors (though a very narrow
glass door way). My next model was the very sophisticated looking
Mindy.
I was requested to photograph her on the couch.
Getting the light just right inside was difficult. The boom light
stand was too much for the interior shots, next time I will use the
lighter stands. Bringing the lighting inside with the extension
cord and sync cords and power cords started to create a unmanageable
situation. I did take great care not to put the cords in anyone's
way with exception of myself. I knocked down the softbox twice.
I have to come up with a better plan for managing these cords. The
lighting was set a bit too low, but I did manage some really nice
low-key shots of Mindy.
Next up was Caitlin. For Caitlin, I had her move
to the corner next to a window and had her sit on a large ornate chair
in the living room. It took me some time to set up the lighting,
but I decided to move the softbox up close to her face for some soft
lighting. To this I also added a reflector to soften the shadow on
the opposite side. The strobes I used are only 150 watt/sec strobes, but my
lenses are incredibly fast lenses so not much light is needed. I
usually set these lights to 1/4 power and it is more than enough.
This was an excellent setup and it shows in the photos. Caitlin
was a natural model and was able to contort herself to the nearly
un-natural positions I asked of her. I realized human models
do not bend like they do in Poser. But the odd contortions make
for interesting photos. Caitlin was able to pull off some very
interesting expressions. The 150mm lens was a good choice here. It
is extremely sharp in its narrow range of focus. But is it very narrow
and you have to focus precisely.
