November 15, 2008:

Photo Shoot at City Art in Van Nuys

This photo shoot was at a fundraiser event held at City Art in Van Nuys.  City Art is an art gallery owned by Alan Semsar of Barcelona (www.Barcelona.la), a company that promotes events.   City Art gallery is currently showing the art of Kamran Khavarani who specializes in oil paintings described as abstract romanticism.  They are very imaginative and colorful.

I scoped out the area to find the best approach.  The art gallery was very well lit, this was a refreshing change from the usually dark environments I had been shooting.  I figured the lighting would make it possible for me to use my manually focused lenses.  The event would be a long one starting at 8:30 going until 1:00 am. So to stretch the laptop power I decided to start with negative backs.  My lens choice would be the 28mm fisheye, 45mm 2.8 wide angle lens, 80mm AF lens and the 150mm AF telephoto.   I decided to use two exposure settings that worked well when shooting the 264 Customs event.  I would use the 125 synced shutter speed for the AF camera and use 3.5 fstop with the bounced flash, the other would be to set the lens at about f11 using direct flash.  Actually I started with my main Mamiya 645 Pro TL with the Metz CL-4 flash and set it  to  the TL mode.  This works great and is a no-brainer since the flash will pretty much figure things out on its own.  Unfortunately the camera bombed out on me toward the end of the roll, I switched to the 80mm lens and the shutter opened for a long time, I could not reset it.  I retired that camera and decided to use the AFD camera.

The basic plan was the same as the 264 Customs shoot, just keep moving, keep shooting and make my self available to anyone who needed a photo.
The cool thing about this shoot was that all the artwork around me could be used as interesting backgrounds.  It was easy to mix it up to keep it interesting.  Not to mention the very interesting and varied group of subjects to shoot.  So I was in my element going around composing interesting photos getting candid and posed shots.

I quickly burned through the first two rolls of film then I decided to switch to the digital back, since, by this time the party was really getting started.   I set up the leaf valeo software and set it for rapid capture, and gingerly set the laptop into my Lowepro backpack.  I also need to carry about two additional lenses with me and before the shoot I was trying to figure out the best way to have these lenses handy.  I realized my soft Lowepro lens case had a velcro belt strap, this worked great.  I also used my leather lens case hung around my neck and a camera case with the fisheye lens in it.  Add to this the backpack which I slung on one shoulder then buckled it around my waist.
