With this new tool in hand, I set out to get some landscape photos.  I was out and about the day after new years day at mid-noon in Calabasas Hills, California.  It was a strange, lightly foggy day.  Normally fog burns off completely before early morning, but this day it lingered all day.  Days like this are a real treat in Southern California, where bright sunny days are the norm.

I drove though Las Virgines road and stopped at Malibu Creek State Park. I took with me my Mamiya AFD, with only my 80mm and 150mm autofocus lens.  I really only needed the 150mm telephoto.  I took my heavy Bogen Manfrotto tripod, my mac laptop and my lunch.  I hiked in about two miles on the main trail through the park.  I stopped quickly at a picturesque watering hole while it was still fairly sunny and set up the camera, laptop and tripod.  I took a series of 9 photos in the 3 x 3 array that I mentioned earlier.  One technical issue I had is that the digital back crops images and I do not have the focusing screen for that format. So I have to estimate the frame.  But I estimate a layout of 9 overlapping images and take the photos.  I also need some type of screen shade for that laptop, because it is difficult to see even at full strength.

After that photo, the weather started changing dramatically.  It was getting really cold and winter-like.  I moved on up the trail.  You don't have to go far before you have to stop and take another photo.  The next photo was of the river valley.  By now, the scene was completely different than the first photo, I'm just talking a matter of about 10 minutes!  Same thing, a 3 x 3 array of overlapping photos.  I move up the trail and take another similar photo of the river valley.  Next I go all the way up the bridge just before the Visitor Center.  I set up the camera right on the bridge and take an amazing shot of the river (it's now more like a river than a creek).   The mountains in the background are extremely rugged.  It's easy to underestimate the Santa Monica mountains, from a distance they don't look intimidating, but when you hike in them it's another story.  Every now and then you'll see someone one the news being rescued by helicopter from these mountains.  I noticed one particular mountain in the background that looked a lot like the one in the opening scenes of Raiders of the Lost Ark, a possibility since they do film here.  There was a mist that hovered over the park, and the sun was getting lower and fainter. A perfect photo op.

After eating my lunch and learning a little about Indian tribes and lifestyles prior to the invention of the camera, I hike further up the river.
