March 6, 2009:
Junior and Vanessa Lomeli's Wedding
My new Mamiya ZD back arrived in-time for the Junior and Vanessa's
wedding, perfect timing. I had a chance to play around with it for
a week prior. The new back would allow me the freedom to use the
camera without a laptop tethered to it. This wedding would be a
trial-by-fire for this new back.
This wedding was done on very short notice, but we took the time for an
interview the night before the wedding. I understand how important
it is to have a face-to-face interview with both the bride and groom
before the wedding. I was able to determine their preferences
which were similar to each other's. They wanted, mostly, a candid,
photojournalistic style (which I am liking more and more) but also some
posed, group photos. We sat down to discuss the timing of the
events, and among other things, my home town of Fillmore, CA. It
happened that both Vanessa and Junior lived in the town I grew up in, so
we talked a good deal about that, but I did have to stop myself to focus
on the wedding.
After talking with the wedding couple, I had to get my game-plan
together. The wedding was to take place in a park in the middle of
Simi Valley, so I googled the location to check out the layout.
There were some nicely shaded areas I could see, I made a plan to visit
these areas before anyone would arrive. I arrived at the park
about an hour before anyone else. I took some sample photos of the
path toward these locations. It turned out that the areas I
noticed from google, were the best locations. It was a bit of a
hike across the park to get to, but it was worth it. The area was
covered by trees on a small hill. I could shoot from an angle
below the hill to cover the homes in the background, so all you can see
in the background is the park. This was the best spot, it afforded
a number of angles to mix up the background a bit.
So I started with the groom in various poses. I tried using some
flash fill, but the lighting was so nice, I didn't really need it.
I used a little flash fill, angling the main flash head away from the
groom. I snapped off a number of photos, then the bride arrived.
I recommended to the couple to shoot together before the ceremony.
They agreed. I can understand the surprise value of waiting until
the ceremony, but I think doing photos before-hand works better
time-wise and puts the couple at ease before starting. I angled
around the bride for the best contrast with the sun shinning in and the
shaded background. I did some close detail shots of the back of
the gown, her tiara, and earrings. I also had the bride and groom
come up close for a ring shot. I used my 120mm macro lens for the
ring shot and some detail shots.
