June 6, 2009:
Our Lady of Grace 8th Grade Dance
This photo shoot was for the 8th Grade Graduation Dinner Dance for Our
Lady of Grace. Basically I would do portrait sessions for the
students and parents in a fixed location.
As I arrived at the hall, I was surprised how nicely decorated it was.
They had set up tables and a dance floor with some impressive lighting
and decoration. They had already set up a backdrop for me in
advance. I brought my own just in case, but I used the muslin to
cover the floor instead. The background was made up of
colorful, semi-transparent plastic strips with two leafless trees on
either side.
As I setup, my number one concern was to prevent any tripping hazards
(this is my insurance background kicking in) so I made good use of my
electrical tape, taping wires to the floor and the light stands.
Note: I need to bring sand bags for the light stands next time.
Although I had set up the lights well, (no one tripped over the stands
or the wires) it made it a bit less flexible moving the lights.
I set up two soft-box mono-lights on the left and one umbrella light to
the right.
I need to either find or replace the radio trigger for the mono-lights,
I had to use the sync cord and it limited the distance I could move
back.
I chose to use my standard 50mm AF lens for the photos. The
auto-focus ensured razor sharp photos. I did try the 45mm MF lens,
but was not sure about the focusing, so I decided to switch back to the
50mm AF lens. I was able to to some full-length shots of the
students, but when the parents joined in, I mostly shot three-quarters
length photos.
During the photo session, I had to make sure the groups stood back,
since I was limited in moving the lights. I found that I
needed to bring the umbrella light forward to provide a soft light-fill.
My wife joined me on this session to assist with the paperwork, I'm
really glad I did, otherwise it would have gone much slower.
In any case, it all worked out well, the mono-lights again performed
great and they recycle extremely quickly. I had a good time taking
these portrait photos, but I found myself wanting to go out and take
action shots of the event, but I was not set up for that. But that will
change shortly. I have decided on obtaining a Nikon D700 with the
24-70 2.8 lens for event photos. It's going to be expensive, but I
think it will be worth every cent.
