October 18, 2008:

Photo Shoot at 264 Customs

This is a photo shoot a trendy tattoo/art/clothing store in Hollywood called 264 Customs.  They make specialized clothing, tennis shoes, art & tattoos.  They are having a Halloween costume party and fashion show tonight.  Sounds like a lot of fun, but fun set aside, I have the consider the photo challenges here.  It will be at night, inside with a lot of fast paced action.  Here's the dilemma:  I'll have to use a camera mounted flash, but do I use my Mamiya 645 Pro TL using film with the Metz CL-4 Flash making adjustments automatically, or do  I use the flash (TL not available) on my Mamiya 645 AFD with it tethered to my Mac laptop, in this case I can use auto-focus but not auto-flash.

I am leaning toward the AFD with the Mac, even though I will be setting the flash manually, I can preview the exposures to be sure they are coming out ok.  Also the AFD syncs at 125 which will reduce the 'Saturday Night Live' effect where there is a blurred image around the flash image.

I will take all my equipment, just in case there is space to setup a small light studio, you never know.  But I am going to set up to be portable and 'on-the-move'.  The game plan here will be to keep it moving, keep the shutter going, and keep my eyes open.  The fashion show may present some interesting opportunities.  I will continue this article when I return tonight.

I have returned from 264 Customs Halloween party and fashion show.  As far as the game-plan went, it went well for the most part.  The Mamiya 645 AFD performed well with the Mac powerbook, which I slid in a backpack tethered to the camera.  There is a Leaf-Valeo portable pack, but it looks about as cumbersome as having the mac toted in a backpack.  The mac is very light weight, so that was really not a problem.  The main problem is with the Valeo software.  The software can easily exit out of rapid-shoot mode and into single capture.  If that happens, I will begin losing the next round of photos as it just discards  photos unless you tell it to save.  I have been able, now, to detect this audibly, when it exits rapid shoot mode it takes much longer to capture the image.  During the night, I checked frequently for this situation, but it did not occur and I was able to continue to fire off one shot after another.
