The biggest challenge of this photo shoot was the low amount of light.  This made it very difficult to focus.  For many shots I had to gauge the distance between myself and my subject and use the settings imprinted on the barrel of the lens.  The Metz CL-4 flash performed very well, other than it went through AA batteries like candy.  I am putting an external dry cell battery for that flash at the top of my shopping list.

I basically set two settings for the flash and camera.  Inside of 264 Customs shop, I set the flash to bounce off the ceiling.  I decided to use two types of lenses, one was my 35mm wide angle lens, the other, my 28mm fisheye lens.  I needed these because of the very tight situations I would be in.  These worked perfectly.  I used two settings, one was to set the flash with the ceiling bounce and the aperture open to 5.6. the other was to use the flash straight on with a aperture of f11 or smaller, depending on the distance.

I was able to take a good number of candid photographs, (some posed) of the party going on around me.  There were a lot of great costumes and it made for some fun photos.

Now, for the ugly:  For whatever reason (I may have been low on my mac battery) the Mamiya lost the connection to the laptop at the worst possible moment, right when the fashion show started.  I swear, I will never be without a second camera on my body with film ready to go! Luckily I was able to capture all of the models before hand during a trial run, these photos turned out great. I used the fisheye sparingly but was surprised how interesting the photos turned out. Because the CCD image sensor only captures a portion of the normal range for that lens it lessened the barrel distortion, and I was really able to get a good wide range in a very tight situation. Even outside where the fashion show took place I was up within a few feet of the action not having any room to backup.

In any case the game-plan went well, and I was able to take a load-full of photos at the event.  For this type of event I desperately need the ZD digital back, but for now the Leaf Valeo back will do.  I am still not sure how to best deal with very low light situations and focusing.  I'll have to think of something, a portable modeling light would have been very handy, I wonder if anyone makes such a thing.

That's it for that photo session.  I'll be back at Lindsey's next weekend to finish shooting the rest of her models.
