After the ceremony I had to move
my gear to a location my wife pointed out, and decided to leave the
mono-lights behind and work with the Metz 45CL flash. This flash
is more than capable by itself, in fact I had to point the main flash
head up an use the smaller flash fill alone. This was perfect for
the outdoor photo session. The sun was low to the back and the
area was shaded by eucalyptus trees all around. We were very
fortunate with the weather which was un-seasonally mild for August.
So we assembled the wedding party and created the usual combinations.
We also relocated to a garden area by the ranch house. This was
ok, nice garden, but there was an aluminum gate all around that proved
to be distracting. The shade from the trees around was a bit
harsh. With a little photo manipulation during post-processing, I
was able to reduce the distracting elements from the background.
I wanted to spend some time with the Bride and Groom back into the
orange orchards, there was a wonderful back road there lined by the
eucalyptus trees. I had a shot planned out with a 300mm telephoto
that would have looked great, especially in the setting sunlight.
However, time did not permit me to pull the couple that far away from
the party.
As the festivities continued, I spent more time with the Nikon, making
use of the generous focal lengths it provided. I captured all of
the events, the entry of the wedding party, the toasts, cutting of the
cake, etc. as the occurred and found it a fairly easy and enjoyable task
with that Nikon.
In the end, I was really amazed at the number of photos I took during
the wedding, about a thousand in total! And also, the few number of
photos that needed to be discarded. In previous weddngs I would
take about half that number and I had a larger number of photos that
needed to be discarded, mostly due to out of focus photos. Since I
used mostly auto-focus lenses, these types of photos were few and far
between. Though the Nikon has a sophisticated method for finding
objects to focus on, it did get tricked a few times to focus on areas I
was not intending to focus on. But all in all it did a great job!
This wedding photo session went very well, there is not a lot I would
have done differently. I think now I have the exact combination of
equipment that should work well in many different scenarios. I may
want to acquire more battery operated, radio controlled flashes that I
can place in key areas.
